Salary of BDS in India.. A Harsh Reality

Well this is one of my favorite topics to discuss in dentistry. This area in India needs improvement.

Is Dentist Salary in India A Scam?

...well read below...

You know the reason why i took dentistry?

(Because...I didn't get a seat into MBBS)..

Apart from this reason, what was the next reason i took dentistry?

Because people in my locality used to say "Tujhe pata hai hamare colony wala dentist hai, woh kitna kamata hai...ek saal ke andar khud ki honda city le li usne."

So money was a big driving factor for me. For me this was a business and i treated it like one. But soon it was my final year bds, i was close to a few of my seniors, they had already passed bds and were working under a few dentists.

So one day i asked a few of them... How much money are you making?

No body wanted to tell that they are making less than Rs. 10,000 a month...

I was expecting they'll say a few thousands 🙂

...but to my surprise someone said..Rs.5000/-

A few other seniors told me Rs. 3000, Rs. 8000/- and one of them told, he doesn't get paid at all...

Hearing that i was demotivated.. I begun to wonder that dentistry in India... is it really worth it..

Patient Value Journey

Follow a proven process to create relevant, valuable and massive piece of content, that drives you more leads..ultimately more patients for your dental clinic

They are literally taking fees in lakhs (private and deemed universities), but paying penny for the same?

I also inquired salary for joining as a dental graduate in my own college, they told it will be Rs. 11,000/- for the 1st 3 months and after every 3 months, it will be raised by another Rs. 3000/-

11,000 salary was on paper, then accomodation, food and some other fees would be deducted and i would get just Rs. 4,000/- every month in my hand.

On the other hand my parallel MBBS batchmate, wanted to join as a MBBS doctor in the same institution...

...guess the salary he would be getting?

Rs. 60,000 per month...provided if he agrees to work in the institution for atleast a year or more..

Usually students use to join the institute; worked there and simultenously prepared for their postgraduation, and once they cleared their entrance exams, they used to leave the institute without working continuously for a year or more.

So, If my batchmate wanted to quit within 1st 6 months, then his salary would be Rs, 50,000 per month..

Now do you see the difference?

Both a dental graduate and a medical graduate have spent money in lakhs for their education, one gets paid good enough, one doesn't get paid enough..

This is the reason for increasing cost of health care providers in India. The institution for a medical profession are charging lakhs for them to be doctors.

Tomorrow the same doctors have to recover their money, they invested in their education and would definitely charge more.

So this is the situation of a dental graduate in India, if he DOESN'T have his own clinic or DOESN'T WANT to pursue his post graduation.

So if you plan on opening a clinic in India, How much money can you make?

Well this depends on the location of your clinic, your specialization, the type of treatment procedure you are performing.

Treatment Type

Earnings

Scaling

Rs. 1,000/-  to Rs. 10,000/- depeding upon amount of work required by the dentist

Basic Restorative Procedures

Rs. 1000 to Rs 10,000/-  or more for a single tooth depending on your clinic location, your infrastructure, expertise, and years of experience

Root Canal Treatments

Rs. 2,000 to Rs 15,000 or more for a single tooth depending on your clinic location, your infrastructure, expertise, and years of experience

Bleaching

Rs. 10,000 to Rs 60,000 or more depending on a lot of factors. This is a rough estimate and numbers may vary

Orthodontic Treatment

Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 5,00,000 or more, depending on type of treatment, materials. This is a rough estimate and numbers may vary.

Single Crowns

Rs. 2000 to Rs. 15,000 or more, depending on material, location of tooth. This is a rough estimate and numbers may vary.

3 unit bridge

Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 1,00,000 or more, depending on material, location of tooth. This is a rough estimate and numbers may vary.

Dental Implants

Rs. 30,000 to few lakhs, depending on number of teeth, location of tooth, bone grafting procedures, sinus lift procedure required or not. This is a rough estimate and numbers may vary.

Extractions and disimpactions

Rs. 1,000 to a few thousands depending on complexity of extractions

I can go on and on. There are so many more treatment options and procedures i haven't even mentioned yet, it may be difficult to give a rough estimation for all of them.

For a general dentist, these are commonly performed procedures.

There are more complex procedures like full mouth rehabilitation, complete dentures, precision attachments, smile designing, aesthetics. You can make lakhs of rupees provided you know how to.

You should:

  • Have Proven systems for patient attraction and retention
  • See an average growth of 200% in less than 1 year

Patient Value Journey

Follow a proven process to create relevant, valuable and massive piece of content, that drives you more leads..ultimately more patients for your dental clinic

The sky is the limit for your earnings.

If a consultant visits you, you'll make around  20-40% of rough estimated rates mentioned above.
