These posts are very important and will help everyone to decide their branch, their college. Every year students have the EXACT same doubt, so consider them as Pillar Posts.

Now coming back to today's topic.

Some choice filling tips

Let me answer some common queries related to choice filling in NEET MDS.

1. Which college should i put first?

A. To answer this question, let me tell you a few things first.

Now there are 2 type of counselling which happen after NEET MDS. 1st type of counselling is your All India counselling via mcc website and 2nd type of counselling if your state counselling.

If you are within 1-300 rank...you have a very good chance of getting a government college via All India Quota.

If you rank within 1-500 in NEET MDS..you have a very good chance of a government college also via state quota..In some states..even upto 1500-2000 rank in NEET MDS you can still get into government seat.

This I'm talking about open category student.

So now the question is should i put preference as per college first or my branch first.

The answer is very simple. The first preference should always be given to the branch that you want.

Because this branch will be with you...till the time you die. If you want to be a orthodontist/periodontist/endodontist/prosthodontist/or any other specialist, you have to understand..

For the rest of your life, you have to practice that..

So choose your branch for postgraduation wisely. I have written a post on best branch in dentistry for postgraduation.

Let's say you have ranked number 1...

And if you want a seat in MDS Prosthodontics. You put any college, you will get it..isn't it?

Now before you put in the name of the college, always ask the pg students who are studying inside for review of the college, or a someone who has just passed out.

(I have written another post on 8 tips for choosing a dental college, please read that post..it will help you to choose your dental college.)

Once you have talked with the pg students..and you're convinced that XYZ college is good for me..

Put that college name first followed by the branch.

Now you'll have shortlisted a few colleges...

In some colleges, some branch will be good..some might be ok..So once you know that..

Start filling up the choice.

The first choice should be the college you want the most.

Consider every aspect..

  • the fees,
  • the stipend,
  • the amount of patients,
  • the cases you get to do,
  • internal politics,
  • material shortage,
  • conference fees,
  • extra instruments which you might have to buy
  • Any additional costs..(fellowships, modules)

Suppose your rank is 1500...

Now naturally everyone wants a government college, so put in all the government colleges, you want...

(I'd be honest..if you are a general category student, at this rank you won't be getting a government seat..except for a few states).

I know i cannot get..a government dental college mumbai..But that is my 1st preference for prosthodontics...even if i don't stand a chance..I'll still put it as my 1st choice.

Similarly all other colleges.

Next...if you want to opt for deemed universities via all india quota..you can start filling the choice of the college as per your branch. (if you don't want a deemed university..don't fill that choice)

Put the college you would want it the most as 1st choice.

Let's say i wanted AB Shetty dental college for my Prostho and my rank is 3400..but last year cut off was 2000..

You know you might not get...still you should put it as a first choice.

You know why...?

I'll talk a little later.

Similarly fill all your preference as per branch and college.

If my 2nd branch choiceis endo..after my prostho...

I'll put all prostho colleges first..then all my endo colleges in the order of reviews which i got from pg student's who are already studying in.

2. What if i get a college alloted via all india quota and if i don't join?

A. If you don't join the college, in 1st list...its a free exit round..

What does free exit mean?

Now before all india quota and deemed university choice filling starts, they ask you to deposit registration fees, which is refundable after your admission is over.

So after 1st round is over and if you don't join a college, they will refund full money without deducting your registration fees.

But if you don't join after 2nd round..they won't refund your registration fees.

So what if you get a cheaper college in state quota or a better seat via state quota instead of deemed university...

Remember, i told you something..

Even if you stand 0 chance for a particular college depending on your rank, I told you to still fill it first?

MCC also states, that if your choice didn't get upgraded after 1st round...(2nd round)...You have 7 days to quit the college or else they won't refund your security registration fees, which you paid.

So using this, you can take a free exit.

3. If i get a seat in second round..will i be eligible for mop up round?

A. The answer is no..You cannot participate in mopup round.

4. Does state and all india counselling start together?

A. There are always come clashes, and they usually dont start together. Always all india starts first.

This is a big issue and deserving candidates with rank within 2000 might be forced to choose deemed university instead of a cheaper private college.

Ideally if you ask me..

There is 1 exam, there should be one counselling.

Now half the student's are not eligible for other states.

Now if i have passed my BDS from Karnataka, i cannot join Gujarat or Maharashtra, because the rules of these states say that people who have graduated from Maharashtra or Gujarat only are eligible to take admission into those colleges in Maharashtra and Gujarat.

Previously individual states had individual exams, which were easier.

Now half the states due to their rules, make students outside of their state ineligible.

Karnataka, Punjab allow everyone to participate irrespective of the state they have graduated their BDS but they won't get a government seat if they are graduated outside of the state.

So before applying to a particular state, read the brochure carefully.

So some states open admission to everyone at the end, when their seats remain vacant.
