1 year fellowship program in implant dentistry in India

Hi welcome to this exciting post on 1 year fellowship program in implant dentistry in India.

I usually am very fond of posting a lot of articles and post pertaining to common problems faced in dentistry by both the dentists and the patients.

So, If you have been following me in my past posts, i have been writing a lot about dental careers after BDS, MDS.

(Dr. Aiman has already written about career options after BDS) and i have covered a few options after MDS.

If you haven't read the post on things to do after bds part 1 and part 2, please check that out now, to get an overview about what all options are possible after BDS/MDS.)

So now coming to implant dentistry.

Is it really worth doing a fellowship in dental implantology?

If you see the trend it is constant and growing every year. People want to focus more and more on dental implants.

In near future, everyone would want to replace their missing teeth with a fixed option, instead of a removable option.

And Fixed partial dentures cannot be given in all the situation, there are situation in which only dental implants can be possible for a fixed restoration.

Now if you see the global searches on dental implants, it is 2 lakh searches every month, the highest searches are from USA, followed by India.

Indians search for dental implants a lot.

But is there money in dental implantology?

Should you be pursuing it?

Now if you have been following me, you know that for me, this is a business, and i treat it like one.

Now if you see the image above..

You can see around 20.6k total keyword variations. Out of which 1200 questions are asked by the patients.

Questions include:

  • What are dental implants?
  • Are dental implants painful?
  • How to get dental implants covered by insurance In India
  • Do Dental Implants hurt?
  • Is dental implant safe

Now you see a lot of people are already searching for this niche in India.

So how much can you earn by placing a single implant?

The answer is simple. It really depends on lot of factors

  • Dental implant system you are following
  • Is there a need for bone graft
  • Is there sinus lift procedures involved
  • Patient budget

So minimum time required by the dentist these days for a single implant placement is anywhere between 20 -30 minutes.

You can place an implant, close the implant site with a suture and walk out.

And you can easily make anywhere between 30k - 1 lakh per implant depending on the implant system, the complexity of the procedure, your clinic location.

And a few more factors.

If you are doing a full mouth case, imagine the possibility. The sky is the limit to your earnings in dental implantology.

So what type of courses you should opt for dental Implantology?

Now there are lot of institutions and private practitioners who offer dental implantology courses.

  • Some can offer 6 month course,
  • Some can offer 2-4 day courses,
  • Some can offer module based courses.

Always choose a course which you can perform on the patients, many courses are offered only on dummy models, that won't help any.

Things to see before selecting and joining the course.

  • How many number of implants you'll get to place
  • The institution offering the course, do they have sufficient number of paying patients (Patient's who can afford dental implants)
  • What is the cost per implant in the institutions?
  • Will you get just to place or even do the entire procedure till crown prosthesis?
  • Does it cover advanced implantology procedures?

Now I'll tell you something about osseo-integration...

After you place dental implants, there is a procedure called osseo-integration which means dental implants will full get integrated with the bone.

Osseointegration

This process atleast required 3-6 months depending on the location of dental implants, if you have placed bone grafts or not.

So one can do loading (placement of crown, only after osseointegration)..

(Now there are also immediate loading of implants, that's a different topic, which is right now out of scope of discussion)

Which Course You Should Select?

If you just do a short course of 2-3 days and place on dummy models, you cannot do the complete rehabilitation and give crown prosthesis.

Hence, it is better to choose a course, which is of 1 year duration, so you'll get to do a lot of rehabilitation procedures on patients.

Tomorrow, you walk out in your own private practice or do consultations, you'll be very confident with all the procedures.

Placing of implants is not a big deal, the big deal is rehabilitation

Now dental implantology is covered in 3 different departments if you plan to do MDS,

  • Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Periodontology
  • Prosthodontics & Crown & Bridge

These days Implantology is considered as a separate branch itself.

So which colleges and universities offer it?

Before i go to list of colleges offering 1 year fellowship program in implant dentistry. Let me tell you one thing.

Most of the government colleges in India, they have very minimal charges, so very expensive treatment options like dental implants are not offered usually.

Patients come to government dental colleges, because the treatment is virtually free.

Patients coming to private dental colleges, deemed universities have money. So prefer colleges and universities where the paying patients come.
