What After MDS in India

Finished your MDS..?

Passed out from your dental college and now you’re tensed…thinking what next?

For me this is a business and i treat it like one..

What after MDS in India?

Now when you pass out from your dental college as postgraduate. You have lot of things coming to your mind.

I’ll list various options after MDS which is possible.

1.  Join as a staff in a dental college
2. Start your own clinic
3. Go for consultations
4. Do some short courses
5. Join Govt Jobs
6. Dental blogging
7. Join Pharma & dental companies
8. Optin for PhD & fellowship courses…
9. Optin for research work
10. Take your own courses

Now looking at first option…

1. Join as a staff in a dental college..

Now a lot of dental colleges post that require senior lecturers at their dental colleges.

Ofcourse you can join in as a senior lecturer.

What will be the pay scale?

If you are in some deemed or a private dental college, you’ll be paid anywhere from 20k to 45k  per month after your MDS.

There are some colleges, who pay even less.

Although we are now MDS, we ATLEAST deserve a pay for more than 50k per month. Where my parallel colleagues who were just MBBS, were earning around 60k per month in a rural area.

So there are lot of staff vacanies in dental colleges, since you have passed out you can approach your own institutions.

2. Start your own clinic

This is one of the best options out there…

At the end if you are BDS or MDS, and want to practice, its clinics…

If you are MDS, and if you visit other people’s clinic. its mostly on percentage basis. I’ll be talking more about it in the  upcoming post…Read futher to find out..

Now if you have your own clinic, and you’re MDS, you might be able to perform a lot of dental procedures.

Now assuming you have started your own clinic..

Suppose you get 5 patients the whole month..

Assume 1 root canal, 1 complete denture, 1 extraction, 2 scaling patients.

And nothing else in the entire month..

So how much you’ll make…

1 root canal…assume you charge a patient around Rs. 3000/- and after that you’ll be giving the patient crown prosthesis..assume you charged him Rs. 3000 more..

You have already made Rs. 6000/-

Now you also got one complete denture patient..Basic Complete denture people charge around 15-20k…LEAST..

So you made another 15k…from complete denture..

You got one extraction…you charged him..1000 more.

And 2 scaling…let’s say 2000 more..

So what is your total earnings..

1. 6000 from Root canal + crown
2. 15000 from complete denture
3. 1000 from extraction
4. 2000 from scaling

These are just rough estimates, you’ll easily make 25-30k with just a few patients.
Now these were the most minimal charges i kept..
These rates will increase more depending on number of patients, your clinic location, and the marketing strategy which you follow.

Now coming on to 3rd option…on What after MDS?

3. Go for consultations:

Most popular option after MDS. Around 80-90 percent of dentists who pass out of MDS, typically go for consultations.

Now I’ll be very frank with you.

Everyone wants to practice in major cities..

I being from Mumbai, I want to stay at my place and want to attract lots of patients.

The problem with this…

Most dentist are in major metro cities.

So the competition is very tough..Most general dentist if they are working for around 10+ year, already have their practices established and they prefer to do most of the procedures on their own.

Only for few things like implants, orthodontics, oral surgery consultations are often done by a consultant.

But if you wanna practice little outside of metro cities, there’s NO MUCH COMPETITION for you.

You’ll get a lot of patients as consultants, ESPECIALLY if you are an endodontist.

Now most consultants get paid on a percentage basis, which is usually anywhere from 60-40 percent or 70-30

1.  60-40: You’ll earn 60 percent if the material is provided by the clinic owner.
2. 70-30: You’ll earn 70 percent, if the material is yours.

There’s a lot scope, if you have a stable practice. Also these days, a lot of clinic owners want newly passed out MDS consultants, to do general practice as well.
If you are a prosthodontist, they’ll ask you WHETHER you can do general practice like root canals, restorations, extractions, implants etc.

Because these are the cases, which come the most in your dental practices.

4. Do some short courses:

Now if you have just passed out your MDS, and if you plan to go on for consultations, as i said above, these days MDS graduates have been asked, whether they can perform routine dental procedures?

So if you have done your postgraduation in oral pathology, oral medicine, orthodontics, oral  surgery or even prosthodontics, you might want to learn RCT again, because that’s the bread and butter of dentistry.

Most patient’s will come to the clinic, with a complain of PAIN.

They keep ignoring, their dental problems, unless it pains.

So you can optin for advanced endodontics course, learn root canal procedure, or may be if you already know Root Canal Treatment procedure, you can check out other courses like fixed partial dentures, you can enroll for short courses for the same.

If you have experienced in these, you can go for other short courses, like lasers, aesthetics (veneers) etc.

After you have done these courses, you can start your clinics, consultations etc.

5. Join Govt Jobs.

Now a lot of government jobs are open every year, where in you can apply to work as a dentist.

You can work in railways as a dentist, or you can apply give NEET MDS again, qualify and apply as a dentist in army (MDS).

The pay is very good. I’ll be posting a separate post on dentist jobs in India.

6. Dental Blogging

Now what i do here, is dental blogging. Now blogging is not just putting content, and hoping readers will find it automatically.

There’s a procedure on how you can market your blog as well. Same methods apply if you want to market your own clinic.

Now coming to money aspect, you can make a lot of money using blogs, sell products on your website, take courses, earn via affiliate commisions.

(Note: If you want to start a blog, i can personally recommend you things you need to succeed with dental blogging.)

Your earnings will totally depend on How much efforts you put in..

7. Join Pharma and Dental Companies

Now a lot of companies are hiring dental graduates and post graduates and they pay good money from 30-60k a month.

There will be a separate post on dentist jobs in India, where I’ll be posting more on these pages.

8. Go for PhD & Fellowship Courses

You can choose to optin for PhD & Fellowship courses after MDS.

9. Begin your career as a researcher.

Honestly, since this post is all about what after MDS in India, research options in India are a little less, and the scope if better, if you plan outside of India.

Research work is paid a little less in India, although you can approach some universities like Manipal, Saveetha, as research work are given more priority there.

10. Take your own courses.

Now a lot of people earn money by taking their own courses, you can be in both academics and clinical fields.

Now i know a lot of endodontists, prosthodontists, who take their own courses and make good amount of money.

Now i take a few courses on marketing your dental practice, How to get more patients using google and facebook.

I also take a few courses on How to convince patients.

Now this doesn’t end career options after MDS. I have also posted career options for BDS graduates apart from MDS, you can take a look of the same here.
