Scope of Dentistry in India..Is it really worth it?

If you have ever visited a dentist in a private practice, you must have seen that the dentist has charged a lot of money for performing some dental procedure on a patient.

But do you know a harsh reality of dentistry in India?

We after doing a course for a period of 5 years have no jobs. Even if a bds graduate works under some other dentist, he will just earn around 5,000-10,000 a month.

So is there any money after doing dentistry in India?

There is a lot of money in dentistry provided you have your own clinic. If you don't have your own clinic, then you are left with 2 options.

  1. Start your own clinic
  2. Do postgraduation in dentistry
  3. Do a short course and go for consultations

Start your own clinic: If you do not have money to start your own clinic, or do postgraduation, or if no one is a dentist in your house...i would advice you NOTTTT to chose this profession. Because after bds no one pays you.

Do Postgraduation:  Doing postgraduation in dentistry is a good option if you plan to earn decent amount of money

So coming back to the question ?

Is dentistry in India really worth it?

What is the scope of dentistry in India?

If you are planning to take dentistry in India there are two scenarios..either you crack a seat in a government college or you end up in a deemed university/private college.

The fee of private college/deemed university will be anywhere ranging from a few lakhs and while in government college, the fees will be few thousand rupees (virtually free)

If you have good financial backup with you...dentistry in India is worth it.

If you dont have financial backup, the only chance to survive is to get into government dental colleges or colleges with less fees..save money..ultimately start up your own dental clinic.

I'll be honest...if you are in some major cities..there's a lot of competition. I'm from mumbai..Before i was about to go for my postgraduation..i had around 3-4 clinics in my locality.

But after i returned back to my hometown mumbai, there are around 8 or 9 clinics alone in my locality.

And if you are in some major metro cities, you'll have a tough time finding jobs after bds or mds.

Even consultations are a little difficult..but you can get it after some struggle.
